Jason D’Aquino – False Strength

Graphite

Using high-magnification glasses, I create intensely detailed miniature drawings. In short, my work draws its influence from two primary sources; the Occult and Children’s Fables, both of which are steeped in symbolism. It is through the use of these symbols that my compositions tell a story. The graphite miniature False Strength is based upon the Tarot card Strength. This piece illustrates my withdrawal from society (represented by the town at bottom left) in an attempt to make a living entirely through my art. More specifically, this drawing warns of the danger of losing sight of art and falling prey to the romanticism of the notion of life as an artist. The primary difference between the new image and that of the Tarot card is that the Lion has been replaced by the mythical Manticore. The maiden (representative of artistic and intuitive qualities) is subduing this creature which, in truth, does not exist. What appears to be an act of strength, is so purely by design. It is all just a show and nothing is really accomplished. The birds (traditionally messengers or harbingers) approach from the distance. In their talons they carry the lifeless form of a serpent. The Orobouros has been slain. Continuity has been destroyed by a vain, self-indulgent digression from the True Path.
